    THE BOOK

Why is choosing yourself so hard? From a young age, we’re taught to put others first, be nice, and not be selfish. By the time we reach adulthood, choosing ourselves feels like a betrayal. But what if it’s not selfish at all? What if it’s the most important decision we can make?

For years, I calculated the cost of leaving but never considered the cost of staying—the toll on my authenticity, peace of mind, joy, and health. I was so focused on what I might lose that I couldn’t see what I was already sacrificing.

Maybe you’re standing at a crossroads, feeling trapped in a toxic job or relationship. You dread going to work, feel guilty for wanting more, or worry about what others will think if you make a change. You wonder if it’s just you—why does everyone else seem fine while you feel lost? You’re exhausted from pretending, scared of starting over, and confused because you worked hard to get here. If this is success, why does it feel so empty?

I know that feeling well. After decades of climbing the corporate ladder, I found myself at the top of a six-figure executive career—only to realize I was unfulfilled and disconnected from my true self. Walking away from a job I had built my identity around and a decade-long relationship that no longer aligned with my growth forced me to confront everything I thought I knew about success, purpose, and self-worth. Through that journey, I discovered that grief isn’t just about loss—it’s about transformation. Drawing from my own experience and years of studying personal growth, I help others navigate major life transitions, reclaim their authenticity, and find the courage to choose themselves.

The Cost of Staying is your guide to trusting yourself, setting healthy boundaries, and building a life that aligns with who you truly are. Written like a conversation with a friend, this book reminds you that sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is admit that the life you’ve worked so hard to build might not be the one you’re meant to live.

    WHy read the book?

Ever calculated the cost of leaving a situation that no longer serves you? Most of us have. But what about the cost of staying?

In “The Cost of Staying,” I share what I learned through 30 years in corporate America: sometimes the price of remaining in misaligned situations far exceeds the risk of choosing yourself.

This book is for you if:

    ○ You’ve felt that Sunday night dread

    ○ You suspect you’ve outgrown your current path but fear change

    ○ You’re tired of dimming your light to fit in

    ○ You wonder what might be possible if you chose yourself

It’s not just my story—it’s a practical roadmap with tools to help you navigate your own crossroads. Through my Growth Through Grief framework, you’ll discover that every significant growth comes with grief—and how to move through that process to find unexpected joy on the other side.

The world needs your authentic self. This book will help you find the courage to choose you.

    Why Kristen wrote the book?

I wrote this book because I kept meeting people who were stuck in the same place I once was—calculating the cost of leaving but never considering the cost of staying.

After that pivotal meeting where I was asked to prop up a toxic environment, I realized I wasn’t just wrestling with a career decision. I was facing a fundamental choice about who I wanted to be. The journey that followed—letting go of my executive identity, grieving relationships that disappeared overnight, and building something authentic—taught me lessons too important to keep to myself.

When I started sharing snippets of my story on LinkedIn, something unexpected happened. Messages flooded in from people saying, “This is exactly where I am” or “How did you find the courage to leave?” I realized my experience wasn’t unique—it was universal.

I wrote this book to offer what I wished someone had given me: permission to choose yourself, practical tools to navigate the uncertainty, and hope that there’s joy waiting on the other side of hard choices.

Most importantly, I wrote it because I believe with every fiber of my being that the world needs more people living authentically. If sharing my messy, imperfect journey helps even one person find their way back to who they’ve always been, then every vulnerable word was worth it.
